Matt Farina (a.k.a. MF), is a UK based Stencil Artist.
Born 1982, Worcester, England
MF started out in the late 1990’s as a keen landscape oil painter. During the years that followed, he decided a new challenge was in order. Inspired by early works in the evolving street art scene, he began creating stencil art.
Early MF works were primarily one stencil layer and high contrast, as seen in his Cupid pieces. With a desire for a more lifelike result, MF developed his style over time into multiple layer stencils allowing for more tone and detail.
MF uses graffiti grade spray paint and stretched canvasses for all of his pieces. The high quality of MF’s work really is the result of the intricate preparation of his hand cut acetate stencils. This is consistent with one of his strong beliefs that a good outcome is a direct result of good preparation.
In September 2012, MF worked with Ben Moore of Art Wars to produce canvasses for The Peace Project gallery exhibition in London. This collaboration was somewhat of a strange twist of fate as it began with MF seeking a powerful image to turn into a piece of stencil art, completely unrelated to the exhibition. MF found a photograph he loved, that of a pink Stormtrooper facing a line of riot police at the G20 protests.
In seeking copyright approval, MF was to discover that the person in the suit and the owner of the image was Moore. From this chance encounter, the relationship between MF and Art Wars has grown and resulted in a series of art pieces inspired by a range of the Stormtrooper photographs. MF has produced pieces for many London Exhibition galleries including the Saatchi gallery in London, displaying with other artists such as Damien Hirst and Mr Brainwash.
